Discussion 2

In what ways does schooling help or interfere with children’s personal growth?
Schooling helps children because class work gives them structure, and discipline.

How do children learn?
Children learn by hearing, seeing, interacting, and relating to those around them.

How do you learn?
I learn through interaction and through hands-on study.

Describe a time when you have taught someone something. What did they learn, how did they learn it, what did you do to help them learn it, and how do you know that they learned it?

A few months ago a neighbor was having difficulty with math word problems, after explaining how to cipher the code words within the problem, he was able to get a figure out they work.

Me

Why do you want to be a teacher?

I thought of being a teacher long ago and even though I thought about it I never acted on it. After spending lots of time with my niece and nephew, and I found myself teaching them colors and counting numbers. Then, I became more involved with their studies and before I knew it they had learned their addresses. I think that it was more rewarding for me than it was for them.

Without using any names or identifying information, tell us about the worst teacher you ever had. What did this teacher do that created this feeling? What are the specific characteristics that made him/her a bad teacher for you?

I had a teacher once and he was not concerned for the well-being of the class. He was consistently late and would be so unorganized that many of the students would correct his math problems. He would give test not covered in his lectures only to discover that they and when the majority of the class failed them he acted as if he could care less.

Without using any names or identifying information, tell us about the best teacher id this teacher do that created this feeling? What are the specific characteristics that made him/her a great teacher for you?

A high school French teacher sticks out the most in my mind. I am most thankful for the advice she gave to me; remain humble and grateful for what you have rather than focus on those things you don't. For a time, I was very pessimistic about the class, but through this class she helped me to turn negative into positive. Focus on the light and not darkness as she would always say helped me turn into the positive achiever I am today!
